Civico Museo Archeologico (Archaeological Museum), Milan - Centre

Archaeological history of Milan

featured in Sights & sites

This museum houses a superb collection of artefacts from the Roman eras, through to the Middle Ages in a historic monastery.

The building itself used to be a Benedictine convent, founded in the 7th century, and contains many interesting features dating back to Roman times, including remains of a house, an imperial palace, the city walls and a Roman circus.

The collection includes mainly artefacts from the Mediolanum settlement (Roman Gauls) dating back to the 2nd century BC. There are also medieval frescoes, as well as Greek and Etruscan objects.

Visitor comments

  • "We really enjoyed this museum. It's well set up with different eras on different floors. Do not miss the church next door." - Trip Advisor
  • "The museum offers you for just 5 euros a complete insight into the historic times of the whole Italy. Apart from the beautiful scenes in the basement of the museum, you can see the whole archeological site hidden from the outside as well as visit a Roman tower." - Trip Advisor
  • "Best place to learn about early Milan (Mediolanum). Mediolanum was the most important Roman city in Northern Italy, an important east-west, north-south cross-roads. Several churches and other foundations about town testify to this history. This museum puts those pieces together." - Trip Advisor
